i want to tell you how much i love you.

-

All afternoon, we listened to his dad’s old records with the odd January sun streaming in through the open window. Spring was weighing heavy on my mind, teasing us with warm days and cool winds and the bright sun.

When my favorite song came on, he offered me his hand and we swayed back and forth, arms tangled around each other. When the last note played, he kept me close, continuing to move as though it hadn’t stopped.

“The song’s over,” I whispered into his chest.

“But another one’s starting soon,” he said into my hair and so we stayed that way for a long time, holding each other in the warmth of this surprisingly beautiful day with the promise of more time hanging around us, as heavy and as light as falling in love.

Let’s not say goodbye just yet, January. Let’s settle on, ‘see you later,’ and hope our paths cross again next year. For now, I’m holding my breath and waiting for the next song to start, counting down the minutes until February’s welcoming embrace.
